Why Algebra Is the Real Reason You’re Struggling in Calculus

If calculus feels overwhelming, confusing, or impossible…
It might not actually be calculus.
I work with a lot of students in Business Calculus, Calculus I and II, and one of the most common things I hear is:
“I just don’t get calculus.”
But when we slow things down, something else shows up.
The Real Problem Isn’t Calculus
Calculus itself isn’t always the issue.
It’s what’s underneath it.
Calculus depends heavily on algebra — and when those skills aren’t solid, everything starts to feel harder than it should.
It’s like trying to build on a shaky foundation.
What I See All the Time
These are the exact things that tend to trip students up:
square roots that don’t simplify cleanly
fractions within fractions (complex fractions)
factoring expressions
exponent rules (especially fractional exponents)
algebra inside limits and derivatives
None of these are “advanced calculus” topics…
But they show up everywhere.
Why This Becomes a Big Problem
When algebra feels shaky:
you second-guess every step
problems take longer
mistakes pile up
confidence drops fast
So instead of focusing on the calculus idea, you’re stuck fighting the algebra.
That’s exhausting.
What Actually Helps
Instead of pushing harder through calculus…
We pause and fix the pieces that are getting in the way.
Not full algebra courses. Not starting over.
Just targeted work on the skills you actually need.
Algebra Skills That Make Calculus Easier
Here are the biggest ones to focus on:
Simplifying radicals
Understanding how square roots break apart and combine

Complex fractions
Cleaning up fractions within fractions without getting lost
Factoring expressions
Especially when solving limits or simplifying derivatives
Exponent rules
Including fractional and negative exponents
Algebra inside calculus problems
Recognizing what to simplify before applying calculus rules
Once This Clicks, Everything Changes
When these skills improve:
calculus problems feel more manageable
steps become clearer
confidence builds quickly
It’s not about working harder.
It’s about removing what’s in the way.
